I applied to translate a small book from a photographer called Lorenzo to translate his book called 25 lessons I've learnt about photography, then the word is crossed out, and replace by about life.
The author posted the ad himself, and then asked for a 1500 word sample to be handed in for July 14 th, so that he chose among the 16 potential contractors...
I sent my draft on July 13th, waited the 14th, 15th, 16th, and the 17th, I followed up with an incentive mail. I told him that he could have sent a word saying he received the proposals and would review it...
It happened that the same week another potential client asked me two samples and seemed to have done it to many other translators since he did not give the job to anyone
...well Lorenzo was the receptacle for all my accumulated wrath...
I told him I thought he was a nice guy when reading him, but it was a shame he got the wrong number. Indeed, 26 would have been better if he had learnt politeness and would have dropped a line to say he received it... Well I guess he must have great feelings for me... Two days later he apologized, telling about personal reasons. Maybe I should learn being patient...
Well wait and see.... In case, I've started the first five lessons; so 20 to go.
The decision will be taken by the begining of August... Let's be patient!
While waiting, let's enjoy the people passing by!!
This blog is my showroom in which I will present the various literary and scientific translationS I carried out from English to French and French to English. Its title is an allusion to the babelfish in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Yet, the cat is far less powerful than the fish since it can only translate from English to French and French to English... Yet, I do hope it will be good at fishing new writers in quest for a good translator....

Subtitles Forget Paris
I recently finished the subtitling of a film... "Forget Paris"
It was a new and enriching experience.
I got the job on Saturday at about noon, it took me the whole afternoon or nearly to download and run through the settings, and get the film, and get started...
It did not take me so long to understand that it would be hard to respect the deadline. Indeed, the film was due the following Monday... So it meant I had only the weekend to do it.
The film was 100 mn long, and the first minute took me more than 20 mn!
You have to respect the layout, a maximum of 40 characters per line, spaces included, and you must not use more than 2 lines... At first, it was quite difficult, but it got easier as I went along. Sometimes it is really annoying because You have to start again a cue you are pleased with only because there is one comma too many!... So enraging...
Well, the work is done, and the client happy, even though I would have loved to have more time to think things over.. But well..it could have been better, but it wasn't that bad.
I worked all Sunday, from 7am to 2 am and got up on Monday morning at 7 again to keep up with the deadline.
When the end of the film came, it was a bit romantic, I was so knackered that I started to cry while watching the film!!!
I would love to do it again.... But not at the same rate!....

Crowe's Requiem Mike McCormack
This novel, Crowe's Requiem was written by Mike McCormark, a contemporary Irish writer.
I have translated almost the whole book but have not yet got into contact with the English editor for the copyrights, and I do not have found a French editor interested in the translation yet.
If anyone can help me in finding the way all the paperwork should be done, I would be most grateful.
Well, since I am on holiday, I will investigate a bit further and am sure I will find a way.

ANGEL
When I
was a child I was told that the man who made time made plenty of it. But
whoever told me that was wrong. There is never enough time, never. There is
only this time and you mark it and pass it and kill it any way you can. Now,
with what time I have left, I want to tell the story of mine time. My time has
come, what else would I be doing? I see this story as the gift of my second
childhood, a story of death and enchantment, madness and delusion, faint hearts
and fair maids; in short, a love story. Given more time it might have been a
different story but that is not the point. The point is that like all stories,
if it goes long enough, it will end in death. The trick is to avoid spoiling
it.
I am
twenty years old but I am already an old man. In fact I am a very old man and
like all old men I am dying. And though I am dying from any number of things I
am dying mainly because I have a bad heart. I would like to be able to say that
I was led astray and killed by it but that would not be strictly true. If it
wasn't my heart it would have been something else, some other foolishness which
did for me.
Nevertheless,
a bad heart is a bad heart and no matter how well intentioned it is or whether
it is in the right place or not, given time, one way or another, it will kill
you.

ANGE
Quand
d'illusions, des cœurs qui s'évanouissent et des jolies demoiselles ;

Welcome!
Welcome to my new blog babelkate
The title of my blog is a reference to the Tower of Babel and to the HG2TG, where the Babel fish worked wonders to translate whatever language in no time.
Unfortunately, the cat is not as powerful as the fish, and can only translate from English to French and from French to English.
In this blog, I will present you my various works in the literary and scientific fields.
And as I am the cat and not the fish, I hope to hook on a few writers willing to have their works published in French or in English.
Any comments are welcome!!
I am looking forard to hearing from you
